I'm sooooo getting those. I loved the show. I think a couple of actors decided not to do voices, I just don't remember who. And I'm too lazy to actually look it up. I can't wait! ;D

LOL I get the feeling alot of even hardcore fans don't remember it. Or the younger generation may have heard about it, but never had a chance to see it. I'm so old....

This series is so old. . . I didn't even know how to read time when it first aired. I was that young! I would just get up on Saturday mornings and flip channels as much as possible (I couldn't read numbers yet either) until I found something good. If I got lucky, I came across this, or at least the Planet of the Apes cartoon.

Hehehe, I used to love getting up in the morning to watch those episodes on tv. I'd love to get them and have been anticipating the day they would see the light in a DVD format!

/commence_necropost I've been curious to see if there were any updates to the online game, and the main website has been pretty quiet for months now. I did find an interview with a dev from Nov, and he mentioned a new "teaser site" would be up at the begining of the year. Seems like they have things moving along nicely now. stozine.com/article.php?story=stinnettexcqa

Penny Arcade mentioned ST:O yesterday and linked to this brief FAQ: startrekonline.com/dev_blog/ask_cryptic_09-17-08It's short on details, but gets me curious about how the skill points work. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but the way it refers to the captain's skill sets reminds me of the Mayor in SWG. But a captain has to be able to fistfight (or diplomacize), right? This would require parts of multiple skill trees, also like old SWG, might it not? OK, I'll shut up before I jinx it. I would like to be an obscure specialist on-board a ship, like the historians and culture experts who were always cropping up for away missions so they could fall into some plot role. If they have musicians on board, that'd be my first choice (hmm, maybe work in Ten Forward as a civilian bar hand?), and then I could apply buffs to crew mates, so as to avoid fighting and PvP, since I tend to shoot myself in the foot with phasers and disruptors (you get to fail one time at that) and such .

I want to be the whiny son of a Chief Medical Officer so they could eventually bump me up to Acting Ensign because i keep saving the ship and or, universe.
But seriously (not that i wasn't before) i was just reading an article about this game in Game Informer, and despite my best apprehension i am actually still looking forward to this game. It does seem like it might be trying to take on more than it can handle at times though.

I still miss the original plans for this game.
Of course with the new system, I would love to be a vulcan science officer running a science based ship. Oberth class ship ftw.
Oh and hi again everyone !

Anybody gonna play? I might give it a whirl, I'm guessing simmuskhan will be my handle, you know, just for something a little different. Got sucked in by my brother, you can read about the adventures of Simmus at: simmuskhansto.blogspot.com/Although I may not update it more than the first time =)

I play it Simm, though I have a lot on my plate right now so I don't get much time to play these days. I have a lifetime sub though, so I'm not in any huge hurry to level or experience everything. I kinda love the game, but I see that it has quite a ways to go before being 'great'. I hope they give it the time to bloom that the franchise deserves.
Love the blog by the way, great as always.

I should make clear that the blog is only very VERY loosely based on the actual events in the game. Please don't judge the story telling in the game by my ramblings - I've taken a little liberty with the truth. Just a tad. An eensy weensy bit perhaps. =)

It's alive ! Ok, I tried Star Trek during beta, kinda. My dinosaur computer choked on it so all I saw was the first ten minutes or so of the tutorial. I am planning on getting a new comp soon, and of course I'm going to give the game a chance. I hear it's a pretty good Star Trek game but light for an MMO? But it's also Cryptic and they are known for massive content updates so it shouldn't be too bad. I'll be keeping an eye on your blog Sim. It's gonna be torture until I get the new comp though. lol

I've had a couple of comments from people about the blog's lack of actual information. I guess for me that's not the purpose of it, I just enjoy taking lots of screenshots and it gives me an outlet for collecting them!
My actual thoughts on the actual game?
Well, I don't think it'll last very long. Perhaps the game itself will, but I don't really see a huge continuous subscriber list. Why not?
In CoX you have soooo much re-playability because each powerset plays so differently. In WoW you have less of that, but still I've logged in every six months or so and started a new character from scratch to play through.
In STO you don't really have that. Sure there are three types of ship and three types of character, but in the end they don't really matter because the space battles are still the same, watch your shields, shoot at the bad guys. And the ground battles are even more samey.
It's the first game I've played where I've not suffered from alt-itis (just as well since you only get 3 character slots anyhow).
Now that might sound like I'm being negative. I guess it's critical of long term stuff.
In the short term though I'm loving it! I love being in Starfleet, I love the ships I've had, to the point where I almost don't like levelling up to the next rank because I don't want to lose my ship - of course then I fall in love with my next ship! I love the sounds, the sights, the uniforms, the plots, the races, it's all Trek, all the time.
If you're not a Trekkie (which, by the comments on their forums, most people are not) I don't think you'd enjoy the game anywhere near as much. It's not brilliantly executed, but it's been great fun for me.
I wish they hadn't been forced to release so early, but even so I think that it's great fun. As for lack of content. Well, I'm kind of in agreement, and sort of not.
There's no end game content, not really. I'm hoping they do a Torchlight and once you reach Admiral, you should be given a desk job if you want to take it up and pass down something to an up and coming new character slot.
As for future expansions, I don't really think they can do much with Starfleet, after all, once you're an Admiral how do you level up? I'm guessing that they'll add more playable races. Klingons are already on the cards, to make them a PvE rather than the primarily focuses PvP they are currently.
I haven't really hit too many difficulties levelling up at the moment. I'm currently at Commander 5, so am well past half way.
The missions fall into categories: Story, PvE battles, Exploration, Fleet and PvP.
There's enough xp in them to go up a rung if you do one of each for most levels. I don't like PvP and some of the Fleet missions are still a bit whacked, so I tend to do the Story missions, 2 PvE battles and 2 Explorations and that pretty much keeps you going. Sometimes you don't need to do as much, it depends on the depth and length of the story mission.
The PvE battles are pretty much the same every time, though the ships you fight against change depending on your location. The exploration missions are randomly picked from a table that I assume will increase with time so that hopefully you'll get the same one less and less often. Even so, they're usually quite quick and once again, the type of bad guy you're up against changes as you level.
Story missions are by far the most fun as far as I'm concerned. But then again, I read the text, know some of the characters and history etc. They are multi-part missions with a chain of related quests that seem very much like an episode of the tv show. They are even designed to last 40 mins to an hour (with plenty of save points along the way).
Speaking of save points. The game is sooooo casual friendly that tons of people are complaining like crazy about it. There is no death penalty, you just respawn 20 seconds later at the last save point. You can drop out of a mission with no penalty. There's no financial pressure, I've found that selling all the dropped loot has meant that I can afford one of each type of ship each rank with money left over.
I haven't had to spend any money on anything else. Loot and bridge officers I seem to collect enough to keep my ship fighting fit. I've kept the same officers the whole way through, when you get new ones you can either swap out old ones, or use the new ones up to train your old ones with a skill that the new one has. That's the option I've been going with because for me, my Bridge Crew are my guys! Although in the game they're just pictures, I've given them all personalities and stories and, you know, that's part of the blog too. Another aspect of the game that most people will ignore, but that some people (like me) enjoy a lot.
Obviously this has suited me fantastically. PvPers etc. HATE the no-death penalty. I love it! It's such a low-stress game, I love the sights and sounds. I'm sure I'll get bored with it soon, I'm not interested in PvP so once I hit Admiral it'll be a matter of either feeling like I want to start again or waiting until they release enough PvE to level as a Klingon.
Anyway, those are my opinions, if you've got questions, feel free to ask. I'll always be happy to spend time waffling on all sorts of tangents, some of which may include useful information!
Sparky... out.

Whoops, I still have to activate my account! I played a bit in the open beta and during the grace period. I'll be back in game when I finally set up my account. =)
Meanwhile, I'm still playing Fallen Earth!
