I know the game is still way off in the future... but I find myself obsessivly checking the official site for updates. I figured I would share any new info I come across for those interested in the game but not checking as compusivly as I do. First, the official site. www.startrek.perpetual.com/index.htmlCheck out the gallery for some early concept art and a shockwave concept movie showing the possible interface. Way early concept stuff, so it may be worlds away from what will be in the game, of course. www.startrek.perpetual.com/images/gallery/concepts/large/1.gif

I've been following this one, too. Sounds like it'll be an interesting game.

I'm kinda sorta following it. I'm pretty sure I'm done with MMORPGs, but STO might trick me into trying it one more time. Of course, I thought the same thing about the Matrix, and, well... we won't go there. Thankfully I found out in beta and didn't actually spend money on it.

The STO site has a few updates! Man I can't wait for this game to be released!
"The engineering and art teams have been working together to see how close we can get to photo-realistic, real time ship interior renders. They've started with the TNG era Galaxy class since it is so iconic and also happens to be the setting for at least one major hub. For this particular exercise, they modeling and rendering a hallway, turbolift, and the observation lounge and rendering it all in real-time with next-generation lighting & material effects. Their results are stunning. "
" One of the (many dozens of) challenges inherent in setting STO "20 years in the future's future" is extrapolating the state of the various great forces in the Star Trek universe in way that feels both dramatically "right" for the story we wish to tell, and "right" for Star Trek in general. As such, we've already spilled a great deal of ink (and slurped down a lot of smoothies) thinking about the "future" of just about ALL of the major Star Trek races (and quite a few of the minor ones). "
So it seems the setting for the game will be 20 years after the last film "nemesis". Good choice imo. It will let them make any changes they need , without damaging Star Trek canon. (*cough* SWG jedi *cough*)

I caught an "Icons" episode on G4 yesterday that showed footage from every Star Trek game ever made, none are which are very famous or easy to find. It was all a bit underwhelming, even the computer games that had actual actor-voice-work, so yes, it'd be wonderful to have one really good Star Trek game.
Geez, remember the Star Trek arcade game, which was a more-complex variation of Asteroids?

Oh I do remember! I have a bunch of the old Star Trek games in fact. Even the two games that were done all in video footage , "Star Trek Borg", and "Star Trek Klingon". Hmmmm I really need to fire up one of those...
I'm such a geek...

I had a Star Trek game. It was not bad at all except for the game-ending BUG it had!!!
It was kind of an RPG. I finally got to one planet and when I walked to go to the next stage of the planet, all my team did was walk until they were very, very tiny and I never reached where I needed to go to continue.

Ok, I didn't want to create a whole new topic for this... it's easier to just add all Star Trek games here. Seems that Bethesda "makers of Elder Scrolls: Morrowind" has been working on 2 new Star Trek games. Star Trek: Legacy for the xbox 360 (yeah!), and Star Trek: Tactical Assault for Nintendo DS and Sony PSP! Good times ahead for Trek Gamers! www.startrek.com/startrek/view/gaming/news/article/15318.html

Nice! Thanks for the heads-up, Ectabat. I'm glad there's more Trek games coming out, and I'm especially glad one will be on the Nintendo DS. I wish it had been developed just for the DS, so that it would be more specialized to that interface, but it is still cool. Of course, personally I've never been so good at space tacticals. Hrmm, when I ponder on it, I guess if I had my choice of a Trek game-type made for the DS, I'd want it to be just like Animal Crossing, but Star Treky. I'm not sure what that'd be like. . . I guess you'd just wander around a Federation vessel running errands for the officers, and trading gifts with crewman, and, uhm, planting fruits, possibly in the arboretum? Okay, so maybe it's not such a great idea for a game. . . .

Found some more info from Bethesda on the upcoming Star trek games for xbox 360, and the handhelds. Figured I would just cut and paste to make it a bit easier for people to read. Click the links if you want to see the screens. Only 2 shots for each game so far. Star Trek Legacy - xbox 360 www.bethsoft.com/games/games_startreklegacy.html"Legacy is an epic game of Starfleet combat covering the entire Star Trek Universe. Players become the Admiral of a task force of warships and must lead their fleet to victory in large-scale battles. As the Admiral of the Fleet you choose the ships, equipment, and captains that you will lead into battle. The game is designed to provide an immersive strategic and tactical experience by emphasizing the dramatic excitement of large-scale battles without the hassle of complex starship management. " "Spans the entire Star Trek Universe. The Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. It’s all here for you to control. Real time Starfleet combat. Engage in large-scale combat with dozens of warships fighting simultaneous battles across vast sections of space. Dynamic three-dimensional battlefields. Beautiful space environments filled with fully realized nebulas, wormholes, planets, and stars. Intuitive controls allow players to quickly select targets and destinations in 3D space. Detailed weapon effects and damage modeling. Weapons searing with energy and charged shields that surge with every hit. Ships with full damage modeling that break apart, strewing debris and sparks. Customizable fleets, ships, and captains. Victories earn Command Points, which are used to personalize your fleet, ships, and captains. Single player Federation campaign. Spanning three full epochs (Enterprise, The Original Series, and The Next Generation). Robust multiplayer with full Xbox Live support. From small scouts and light cruisers to fearsome battleships. Command the powerful fleets of the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Borg races. All beautifully rendered with the latest technology." And then Star Trek Tactical Assault - Gameboy DS, and PSP www.bethsoft.com/games/games_startrektacassault.html"Star Trek: Tactical Assault is a real-time spaceship combat game for 1 or 2 players, featuring a wide array of authentic Star Trek races, ships, and weaponry from the universe of the original Star Trek series. Players take command of powerful Federation and Klingon warships and must outthink and out duel their opponents in order to succeed. Play through either the Federation or Klingon campaigns in single-player mode or go head-to-head against a friend in wireless multiplayer action." "Based on the films of The Original Series. Space is the final frontier, Kirk is in command, and the Klingons are the bad guys. Play through the era that started it all with this classic Star Trek game. Real-time combat involving multiple warships. The true test of a Captain is his ability to act under fire. Every second counts as you attempt to out-maneuver enemy warships and expose their weaknesses while protecting your own. Two full campaign modes. Become a hero of the Federation or a champion of the Klingon Empire in two full-length, independent campaigns. Branching missions with multiple outcomes. You are in command. As the Captain, it is up to you to make the best decisions for your crew. With a multitude of paths to choose from, you will decide the direction and ultimate outcome of your campaign. Head-to-Head wireless multiplayer. Test your skills and tactics against the most challenging opponents you’ll find…your friends. Five playable races. In Skirmish and Multiplayer modes, command ships from the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Gorn, and Orion fleets. Each fleet has its own combat philosophy, strengths, and weaknesses. Tactics that lead to victory for one race will result in disaster for another."

More updates! For those still keeping an eye on the Star Trek MMO... www.startrek.perpetual.com/gallery.htmlA Link to a couple of pictures taken with the actual game engine. Way too early to tell if the final game will look like this. I think this may be some early 'what if' shots. But still looks very pretty, and I hope they get close to this.

I like the pretty conceptual characters. I wonder if player's might be allowed to make non-Starfleet ship's staff, a la bartenders. Also, will therapist/counselor be a playable class? Also, can you steal Spock's brain? Any clues in these sketches, Ecta?

Spock's Brain is a quest itam. Or maybe i'm thinking of the part where you have to go to the genesis planet and watch him be reborn.

A bit early to say for sure.. but after looking at the sketches here... www.startrek.perpetual.com/GalClassHubDeck7SciMed.htmlI would guess they plan on including alot of "non traditional" areas. The large galaxy class ships are meant to be player cities in space, so it would make sense that different options would be available. I think ship's counselor is pretty much a lock. A bartender for ten-forward would be great as well, but no idea if that will be a player character, or npc.

Oh, and on a side note, this is a quote from Daron Stinnett, from the interview at www.mmorpg.com. "Playable races are those that you might expect to see on a Starfleet starship and will likely include Human, Vulcan, Klingon, Bajoran, Bolian, Trill, Tellarite, Andorian." This is a slightly expanded list from some of the earlier interviews. Should bring smiles to some fans of the more obscure races like Bolians, Tellarite, Andorians, etc. I still plan on being Vulcan, of course.

OK, Trills are good, but they should dump those other two for something that doesn't suck. Something that wasn't used as scenery for the most part.

That'd be pretty sweet--if they actually had that many playable races, each with it's own base attributes and racial abilities. What's the record for an MMORPG, anyway? Which one has the most playable races? I'm leaning toward Bajoran--they're so cute with their little nose ridge. But then again, Vulcans get to play that bitchin' harp. Hmmm.

I was actually leaning towards experimenting with trill... only because in my warped mind I was hoping if your Trill character dies, you get the option of 'remaking' you character when they come back. Switching from young, to old, male, to female. It just struck me as funny. ;D Even though I'm sure it would never happen. But yeah, I get the impression that the playable races are still up in the air. Ferengi would be one of my favorites to add to the list, but who knows?

It occured to me this morning that if you made a Trill, that'd be really convenient because you could name all your past Trill lives after all your alts from other MMO's, and then old friends from other places could spot you just by reading your bio!

Hey, just noticed they're releasing the Star Trek cartoon on dVD, finally. www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/ANI/index.htmlI'll be honest--I don't think I've seen these since they first aired, so I'm not sure how great the stories are, and the animation might not be the greatest ('74-75 era stuff), but it had all the original cast doing voices, I believe, so that alone might be fun to check out again. Any takers?
