I'd de-rail this thread, but I'm saving every penny right now. Um....watch Firefly? It's da bomb? (seriously, watch firefly) See Connrad I can avoid derailing the thread (I almost fell for Obos' wily tricks...) Anyhoo... Obos, Yes Firefly was Incredible, likely one of the best shows FOX ever cancelled out of stupidity (But then, I'm a big fan of "Greg the Bunny" too, also a good show, which was also cancelled by FOX). Buuut... here's the official site: www.serenitymovie.com/ it has a trailer too.. but I'm still waitign for it to load I believe the release date is September 2005?

My only worry is I didn't see Kaylee (the ship's engineer) in the previews (or did it just go by so fast I missed it?)

Yeah that show (along with many others) is why i never get into new shows on fox till they atleast make it one whole season, they always ALWAYS cancel the good ones (ok that's not true there are a few good ones that somehow made it through). I don't even remember them finishing the first season. And i did just recently see the Serenity preview and i'm giddy as a school girl over it.

When they brought back Family Guy the first episode they took about 10 minutes just saying all the names of the shows Fox started and either cancelled, or cancelled after the first season ended. it was pretty funny

Just wanted to take a second to thank all of you for drawing my attention back to this series, which I mostly missed on the first go-round. I went and bought the DVDs today and just watched the first two episodes. It's got the first-season clunks, as all series do, but not in any debilitating fashion. And it does have those pleasant Joss Whedon reversal moments (where he turns cliches on their ears.) Fun! My only worry is I didn't see Kaylee (the ship's engineer) in the previews (or did it just go by so fast I missed it?) No worries, Zubin. I spotted the name Jewel Staite in the cast list, so we're cool. (Yeah, I like her, too. ) Oh, and Obos, I hear that River's big secret is. . . she's really a guy! Lady Day

Okay, Was scanning around for an episode guide for Firefly (not that it would be very thick ) and I came upon this, a collection of essays: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1932100431/qid=1119554613/sr=8-6/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i6_xgl14/002-5939560-0451204?v=glance&s=books&n=507846Looks kinda interesting, especially the essay by Jewel Staite (Kaylee) going into detail about her personal recollections and her five favorite moments from each episode, but also the "Mirror/Mirror" parody! And I wouldn't mind perusing the glossary of all the Chinese phrases used in the dialogue. Anybody happen to own this, by any chance? I may head over to Barnes & Noble later to see if I can scare up a copy. Always looking for an excuse to go record/book shopping. . . . Inquisitive Day

Hey you California People! Joss Whedon and damn near the entire cast of Serenity will be making an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, scheduled for July 14-17. www.comic-con.org/cci/cci05_prog_sat.shtmlPlease, somebody go see this, since I can't! / mood envious

I wouldn't be real thrilled to meet Whedon himself since i'm not really a fan of his, but a fan of the show but since the others would be there it'd be cool. However seeing as California takes up nearly the entire west coast, it's not quite the hop skip and jump it might seem. Thus... i won't be making it.

I can't go to that, I'm going to be in L.A. seeing three nights of Widespread Panic at the Wiltern Theater that exact same weekend and would be way too much trouble (exausted as well) to drive down to San Diego for just a Sunday there and have to return to Ventura to be ready for work on Monday.
Oh well, nothing is ever times right. I really wanted to go to Virgina to The All Good Music Festival...bleah...no money to go that far anyways.

Yes, I am still obsessing on Firefly, at least until the new season of Battlestar commences. Anyhow, I've been reading through the essays in that book I linked earlier. Some of them are fairly thought-provoking. (Ginjer Buchanan blames the death of the show on not just the impatient Fox execs and their 8PM on Friday "Death Slot," but also Joss Whedon (for trying to revive a proven-dead genre in the first place) and Gene Roddenberry (for creating the preconception that every sci-fi show must contain alien lifeforms as characters)!) My favorite essay so far is a terrific piece on the crews' preconceptions about freedom by the very intelligent and articulate Mercedes Lackey. Aidin, I wanted to share with you this observation she had about your boy, Jayne: And Jayne--well, Jayne is a junkyard dog. He is all flaws; but he just might have some redeeming qualities, and if anyone can ever get real loyalty out of him, there is no telling what he might be willing to do. The two characters with the least illusions about their personal freedom, of course, are River and Zoe. Mal is in fact lying to himself the most, if he thinks he is truly free, like in the theme song--he takes too much responsibility for his crewmembers, and also he's only free as long as the Alliance does not decide he's creating too much heat, which is only a matter of time since he is shielding River and Simon. Fun stuff.

Two proofs, as my english teacher once said What? Oh, are you asking about the River and Zoe comment? Ok. River has no misconceptions about where she stands, despite the haze of hallucinations she seems to exist in. Her weirdness and strange episodes are the result of bad connections in her brain tissue, stemming from the mysterious experimental mind surgery at the hands of some government shadow agency. Deep down though, she knows the truth, that she will be pursued basically forever. She is not truly safe anywhere, and it is just a matter of time until she and her brother and their protectors are found. She knows everything she has and everything she enjoys is temporary, and she exists comepletely in the Now. You can see this exhibited in her face in those rare moments of clarity she has. Zoe, meanwhile, has no illusions about the life she and her companions lead. She knows that all the "freedom" they enjoy can vanish in an instant, any instant, and she exists in an almost Zen-like calmness, at least when physical action is not required of her, or when she isn't arguing with her husband. Deep down, she is ready to deal with anything that happens (remember her composure even when she walked into the enemy's stronghold to attempt to ransom her captain and husband in "War Stories?"). Good day or bad day, Zoe knows that fortunes come and go. What she lives for, like Mal, is an end to the unjust society of the Alliance which rules the known galaxy. Unlike Mal, she does not persist from day to day out of habit, but because she realizes that in the big picture, this empire cannot maintain itself--it is already stretched visibly thin. The Independents lost the Battle of Serenity, but the Alliance cannot properly control all of the frontier planets it won domination over in the war. Someday, whether Zoe lives to see it or not, the empire will inevitably fall. Zoe knows that Mal and the ship live just beyond the reach of the Alliance only because it is currently more convenient for the rulers to let them live. She contributes to the ship's missions because their dissent can in part lead to the collapse of that empire, by pushing against the status quo when it can, here and there. This freedom of perspective gives her a special power. There is a freedom that no government, however despotic, can take--the freedom to use your mind and make the most of every unlikely opportunity. And the less illusion you have, just as with Zoe and River, conversely, the more real power you attain, until, in the end, like the aikido master, you wait for the great force to exert itself on you, slip aside, and assist it into a wall. (Lackey, "Serentity and Bobby McGee," FINDING SERENITY, p. 71) Hope my paraphrasing explains it well enough. Buy the book if you want to understand it better!

I never saw the tv show, but I just watched the trailer, so I have no idea what is happening. Who is the girl who kicks much butt? Everyone seems to be after her and afraid of her at the same time. That makes for an interesting character.

SHow starts airing again on Sci-Fi july 22nd ish. Watch or buy the DVD's. Tonight! 6PM CST! (yeah not the best slot, I know) IF you are home and IF you have the SciFi Channel, please do yourself a favor and make a Jazz Godess happy. You'll be getting in on the ground floor, which is a better deal than the original viewing public got since the true pilot of the show never even got aired until after the show was cancelled! Hey, even my parents like this show. Great characters, nice storytelling, plenty o' cuties and hot space cowboys! Something for everyone. (Unless you are a space alien. There are no space aliens. I know, I know, that describes half of you. )

Well, I hate to admit this.. but I was one of many people who missed seeing this show when it first aired. After seeing all the love in this thread, I did indeed watch the show on Sci-fi, and of course got hooked. Well, not so much hooked as fell madly in love with. I love Whedon's work, and have been a rabid Buffy fan from the begining but the idea of a "space-western" had me turned off way back when it was first run.
Since seeing the 2 part pilot Serenity, I have been going nuts trying to get my hands on more episodes cause I'm just impatient like that. I have just finished the episode "bushwhacked" and I now see it as my mission in life to get the dvd set.
Big thanks to everyone talking about the show in this thread for converting me. Now if you will excuse me, I need to go watch the next couple of episodes. ;D

I made sure the disks were up front on my netflix list so I should be able to see the whole show soon, but it isn't the same as owning. I'm a big nut for boxset dvds so this is a must have. I still have about 20-something dollars left in a gift certificate on amazon, and the set was around $34 I think? So yeah.. gotta buy it.
And I am obsessing over that fanclub site now... I spent hours reading and watching videos there.
I'm just an obsessive geek when I find something I like.. can't help it! ;D
