I don't know how many people have been watching the new NBC series Heroes, but I thought it might be fun to start a thread to discuss it. (and if people aren't watching it yet. what the heck? Go download the eps ) I thought it would be cool to have a place to discuss the show, brainstorm different theories and ideas about what's going on, and what's gonna happen etc... I'm way hooked so far... and I've become a big geeky fan of big geeky character Hiro. I mean c'mon... Japanese geek who reads X-men, watches Star Trek and plays tons of video games. He rocks! For people who don't know, nbc's site for the show has the second episode available to watch online. Plus they are putting up online comics that go along with each episode which give you some great background on the characters. Ok, that's enough to get started. (I hope I'm not the only person geeking out on this show?) *and yes I soooo totally made that title to make Billie read the thread*

LOL! Yes it worked, too. Of course I caught the show and I said, "Hey!" when the Japanese guy mentioned the very first X-Men comic I ever read by specific issue number. That would have been spooky in the distant past but of course X-Men geeks are everywhere now. Still, I was pleased that they got the details so right. Of course, everyone I know who saw it likes that guy best. I like him because of his personailty (he basically seems to have wished his powers into being) but also because he seems to be a human TARDIS! No other teleporter in comics that I know of has the same concept--if you can bend space to teleport, then why not blink from Tokyo to New York as easilly as you can cross the room? And if you can do THAT, then why not travel in time as well? It's not too much of a stretch in concept, so let the little guy do BOTH. It makes things interesting. Also, of note, Sci-Fi Channel is replaying the episodes on Friday nights! So those of you who are merely curious can tune in tonight and catch Episode Two (you have not missed too much, honestly--episode one is easily summed up in flashbacks since it was all setting up the characters for the old people who need their hands held when watching a superhero, to be sold on the idea--we're already all converted). After that of course, you can stay tuned for an excellent Dr Who (worth watching just to see Who meet Queen Victoria!) and then the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica. PS I can play a really nice version of "Heroes" on guitar--it's basically just D alternating with G, and then C on the "But nothing will keep us together" part, and sounds good even without the melody line, once you get the strum down.

Oh wow you make me want to break out the old guitar... after way too many years! lol
But yeah I love the whole idea of Hiro's powers. After episode 1, Tim Kring the creator(also created Crossing Jordan which I love) answered people's questions about Hiro.
"As is clear on the pilot, Hiro’s ability is that he can bend space and time, allowing him to teleport anywhere he wants to. And the bending of time allows him to teleport himself into both the future and the past. But this has very serious consequences and very serious rules that will be set up very quickly."
Oh man I can't wait to see if something weird happens when Hiro tries to act on the information he learned from his jump into the future. I mean think about his power... it would mean almost anything would be possible. He could look into the future and see how the heroes deal with a villian/problem and if it turned out bad, just jump back and warn everyone. I just think it could lead to a Quantum leap style problem... you know, jump in time, fix one thing and break a dozen more.
Also there is an "official/unofficial" fansite called 9thwonders.com. Based on the in-show comic book which has some of the artwork done by the character Isaac in the show. It makes me wonder how significant this Uluru monster might be in future episodes?? We saw Niki's son reading the comic in the first episode and it had the big U guy on the cover, and since Hiro saw himself in one issue of the book does this mean other things from it are real?
P.S.(btw just over the issue number of the comic book Hiro grabbed it has that same weird DNA like symbol that kept popping up like EVERYWHERE in episode 2)
P.P.S (sheesh I'm gonna end up editing my posts like a dozen times each as I think of more stuff) but anyway about your comment about no other teleporter going through space and time, the only person I thought of was one of my ALL TIME favorite Marvel characters. Magik, Illyana Rasputin (AKA little sister to Colossus) would jump through time and space with her teleport disks. But I still like your way of describing his power... he really does seem to be like a human TARDIS! LOL

I've been watching it too because I really like the concept. Can't say for sure I'm totally hooked on the characters yet though. There hasn't been enough backstory for all them yet for me to be really attached. But, you're right.. out of all of them, the best one is Hiro!

Super Hiro !!!!!!
I have seen both episodes. I am still not sure what Stirpper Mom's powers are and it seems that good brother can borrow powers from other people and that is why he can fly when around politics brother.
Cheerverine's father is set up like he is the bad guy, but I am not too sure yet. I would hate for it to be that obvious.
Not too sure what Sylar needs the brains unless he is eating them to obsorb their powers or giving them to the psuedo government agency people who were stealing stuff from the professors house. The girl who saved him is most likely a plant.
You should go to the website and read Hiro's blog. It reads like a total game dork's blog would.

I LOVE hiro's blog! And I think it's cool that most people who post on there play along in character too! (except for the occasional goober who has to ruin it of course)
On the NBC site Tim Kring implied that Peter (nurse brother) wasn't able to fly himself. From what he said, I'm leaning more towards Peter being able to "borrow" other people's powers maybe? So yeah Kikra I think you nailed it. "'Can Peter Fly?' You’ll have to stay tuned to find out whether Peter can fly or not, but a clue might be in what his profession is as a hospice nurse, which is a very “empathic” profession. "
Oh and he mentioned that Niki (stripper mom) was pretty much a kind of hulk-like split personality. "What is the stripper’s gift? I think it’s safe to say that you can look at the special abilities that Niki has as being somewhat similar to the incredible hulk or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In other words there’s an alternate personality that emerges when she is pushed to her limits… It will evolve as the show goes on in unexpected ways."
Yes I'm obsessed with finding out ever detail I can get my hands on. I mean seriously.. that helix symbol was even in the pool at the house where the little girl was found! (and the parents got messed up by Sylar... sheesh that was some wild stuff)
I just can't wait for more episodes. There have been plot outlines revealed up to episode 4. Don't worry, I'm not spoiling that all that.
*Love the name Cheerverine* LOL ;D

Seriously though, with stripper mom. Multiple personalities? Didn't that used to be a mental disorder, now it's a super power? For a moment there i had almost convinced myself that they were just leading us on with her and it's actually her son that's special (being all genius and all) and she's just got issues. So now, assuming we've all seen episode 2, we know that this isn't the first time her 'powers' have manifest themselves. This last time was in self defense sure, but jeez even stripper moms don't get attacked THAT much, so is she a good guy(girl) or no? I do, because of all these questions, think that she's one of the more interesting characters. I actually hadn't though of the nurse man as one who uses other's powers, but it totally makes sense. And as for his brother, good guy or no? Kneejerk reaction is to say politician=evil but we'll see. Cheerleader girl, as far as i'm concerned, could be taken off the show, her powers (the ones we've seen so far) have been done to death and her scenes make me feel like i'm watching Buffy or Smallville which i hate. It's hard to like druggie 'cause he's high all the time and we get no real sense of his personality, but i don't dislike him (as i do Claire). And cop man was just introduced this week so there's not much to know abou thim either but i like him for no apparent reason since he seems to be just another psychic thus far.
But yes, Hiro is definitely the best. He does, after all, travel in time by getting constipated. I almost never travel in time when i'm constipated!
One of the biggest questions for me, is why all their powers are activating now. We learned (again, assuming we watched the last episode) that Sylar was the first but did i miss something? Like where they said what the trigger was, 'cause they're acting like it's the next step in human evolution and such but i'm not getting that. And i'm not sure 'evolution' has a "patient zero".

I still don't know where they are going for the origin of everyones powers either. I think that's the one plot point that could make or break the show.
As for stripper mom and son? Tim Kring also hinted that the son might show powers. If I had to guess I would put him in a similar category as Forge from X-men. Sort of like a Tech wiz kind of person.... but who knows?
He also implied that one *hero* might become evil at some point. Niki (stripper mom) would get my vote for character most likely to turn simply because her powers make it the easiest and most obvious. I mean what if she got stuck in that alternate self and went on a rampage like Hulk? A bit simple and gimicky I admit, but I can see it happening.
I sooooo hope the politican turns evil though. I mean his power (flight) would be the most simple power, not all that scary... but his personality and position in politics would make him dangerous I think.
I also get the feeling that the artist is going to become more important than we think. Is he just seeing the future... or somehow making it happen? (a big stretch I know, but it would make a nice twist on the generic "see-the-future" guy)

Most people were calling it a stylized f, but someone recognized it as part of a DNA chain. When Prof was viewing the file from the disk and said that he could now find everyone with powers, it was there in the spaces.
Patien Zero would be the first person with super powers, so it stands to reason there would have to be a first, but wether or not he is important or more powerful is still questionable.
Besides, I already know where Patient Zero is.
I found out he was working for Dr. Vahzilok and beat the crap out of him and sent him to the Zig.

Cheerleader girl, as far as i'm concerned, could be taken off the show, her powers (the ones we've seen so far) have been done to death Too true, about the powers. But I have the sneaking suspicion that she will somehow become the linchpin in the story at the very end. The other, smarter people will figure out what needs to be done, and it will fall to her to be the tank, since she is pseudo-nondestructable. Otherwise, is she just in the story to be eye candy, or will they give her another duty to help with advancing the storylines? HEY--this is bugging me. Everyone has probably noticed how so far the powers are often tied in closely with the character's persona. Stripper/Mom is a Dr. Jeckyl; the artist paints visions of the future, the Tokyo sci/fi geek who obsesses on American culture can teleport himself there (a power explored often in both X-Men and Star trek); the cop solving a crime can hear the cries of victims; the nurse is empathic in his absorbing of powers from people he touches; and, uhm, the cheeleader is a very active girl and she tries to "look perfect" all the time, so maybe her athletic extracurriculars triggered a literal physcial perfection; BUT what's the story with the politician? Candidates don't fly, do they? Does he have an aeronautical background or something? Finally, LOL Kikra, I beat that guy up, too. Wayyyy back when. I'd forgotten about that.

LOL! I just finished that mission series with yet another character. Sheesh I must have done that storyline about a dozen times now and it's still fun beating the tar out of those zombies! But those are good points about the origins... if Sylar is a "patient zero" and got his powers first, does that mean he was the cause of others getting powers somehow? Or that he was the first to stumble upon whatever was responsible for the powers? Like I said the origin is the only thing that really concerns me. Tim Kring has said he's never been a fan of comics and in fact is going out of his way to not read any now so he isn't influenced at all. Which is a good thing I suppose... but I just worry that his explantion for how it all happened will be some crazy lame thing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though!

So, after watching ep 3 a couple of times, I have some questions.
Who was the guy in the bar just before the cop passed out? It wasn't Sylar, I don't think... but if not him, then who?
Who was the creepy girl at the bonfire?
I just have to say... OMG that ending freaked me out!! I literally jumped out of my chair and did the OMGOMGOMG dance at how creepy and disturbing that was! I loved it! lol

I thought the guy was Sylar, but then again i had the fleeting idea that Sylar was stripper/mom's ex as well. Though if that guy wasn't Sylar, i suppose it could still be the ex. I'm only guessing that they wouldn't spend almost an entire episode talking about the guy if he weren't going to be an important character (stripper/mom's ex that is). I loved Hiro's new tricks but i don't love how they throw the Nissan Versa in as though it's not product placement. Cheerverine, i must say, has got to be the UNluckiest cheerleeder in the world. It's been a matter of days and already this girl has had her head subsequently snapped and pierced by (as far as i can tell) the same guy. I'm getting the feeling that i'm watching Final Destination and not Heroes. If she is the linchpin, then she needs to start watching her damn back.

I just don't get the guy in the bar at all... I know it's not D.L. , the stripper's husband cause he's the guy from Buffy the vampire slayer. I already found a spoiler that gave away what his power is... but I'm not gonna ruin it here. (although if the spoiler was right... and that is his power, the people still saying the show is an xmen clone are gonna have more ammunition.) www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0813715/Ss/0813715/9.jpg?path=gallery&path_key=0813715Oh and I rewatched the ep many times and freeze framed the heck out of it to try and see Sylar better. People on the net have been saying it's Cheerverine's dad... (no way) or D.L. (Sylar looks more like an older white guy with a scruffy beard, so it ain't him) I pretty much don't think we've seen this Sylar guy before he grabbed the girl. But that guy in the bar.. he even had the symbol on a necklace... it seemed they want people to think it was Sylar for sure. But what made the cop pass out? I'm soooo confused by that. Oh and supposedly the weird girl at the school bonfire is named "Eden"? And will be somehow important later... Freaky

Yeah, i'm sure it'll be released on DVD eventually. But you can always get it through the typical not-so-savory channels as i have to with Doctor Who. For an old scoundrel such as yourself, that shouldn't prove too taxing.
Edit: Or rather you don't have to go through unsavory channels, i believe NBC puts it on their website to view for free after each airing.

They do, but I haven't been able to figure out how to view the past episodes, so someone who hasn't seen them yet may not be able to unless they find an alternative means.
I need to review all of them for discusions so that I can go back and ignore the actors in a scene and look on dressers, wall and other parts of the scene for clues that I might have missed.

I know I'm spamming my own thread with all the posting. lol But I can't help it! Tonight is the Las Vegas episode, and zap2it has an interesting article about Heroes on their front page. It does contain some big spoilery type things, so for those who don't want any hints about what's going on, you may not want to read. One not so spoilery thing was: "On the breakout popularity of Masi Oka's Hiro: He wasn't in the early draft of the script. He was added, when I felt the show needed a little more levity and a character who embraced their power with certain amount of enthusiasm. I think it's just his enthusiasm that people find so infectious. As the show progresses and the characters become more comfortable with who they are and what's happening, some angst and resistance drops away, and they will embrace the powers with more enthusiasm as well. OK, that was a cool ending! I loved the thing with the cheerleader having her revenge (who said she has to be a hero, anyway?), and the Days of Future Past thing with Hiro was unexpected, but fun. He actually foreshadowed it specifically when he mentioned that X-Men story weeks ago, didn't he? Oh, and the big "clue" next week looks like what I expected--the cheerleader is the big linchpin in in it all. Now, did I actually beat Ecta with the speedpost, or can he type faster than I?

Well, i'm liking stripper mom less and less. I was hoping that when they finally showed her 'change' that there would be some sort of, you know... Change! But no, she just gets a little pissier is all. (or as some might say, "She just goes a little... mad sometimes. We all go a little... mad sometimes.") I was hoping for some sort of physical tranformation to actually seperate what she's got from any old regular every day multiple personality disorder. I'm hoping more and more that she's kinda there to add story too (kindof a hat rack, if you will. And other, more interresting characters such as her son and Ex are the "hats".) I may be wrong and she may turn out cool, but so far a big "meh". I liked the cheerleader's revenge but jesus how drunk was he? Did he not SEE a piece of wood in her freaking head? I'm kinda upset that they just basically left us hanging for two weeks about cop guy and mystery man, but i suppose that's why they put 'to be continued' at the end instead of leaving it as a given.
One thing though. Nurse man said that he'd drawn the future when he was around Junkie (as well as fly when he was near his brother). Where did he draw the future when near Junkie? Did i miss something?
|
|
|
Post by Kikra on Oct 17, 2006 5:37:19 GMT -5
He didn't do it near the junkie. He has finally figured out what we have already known. He gaines the power of whomever he is near, which can make him the most powerful character if enough supers are near him. IT was the doodle on the notepad that he was talking about where he drew two stick figures and one had stepped off a ledge into the air.
Did you notice that Stripper Mom when she kicked the crap out of the thug said, "If you ever threaten OUR son again, I will put my heel through your skull."?
After getting one shot, I am guessing that Hiro went into the future or past and gained some ninja/samuraii training. Something is going to happen to his eye it seems. The left one was a little milky.
Since he hasn't posted yet, it looks like he had a geekgasm and hasn't come down off it yet.

ACCCKKKK!!! *cry* My dsl connection got borked right as the show ended! I was calling tech support like every two minutes. lol But yeah you all beat me to the post. Ok so The creator has hinted that Niki the stripper has more going on with her (and her powers). He has hinted her son may have powers, and I found some spoilery stuff on the net about Niki's husband and what his powers are... (don't know if either the son or husband wear hats .... *shrug*) so yeah she is going to be a bit more important storywise. I still think she has the most potential to go "over to the dark side" but then a couple of the heroes got a bit shady in this last episode. Ok.. Hiro. Loved the look of Hiro at the end, but I'm wondering if that was a recent future Hiro that may pop up during the show, or if it was like... many many years down the road and we will only see that version in this ep? And just what was Hiro doing in the casino? I enjoyed those scenes, but I was a little disappointed. Hiro was getting a bit too push-around by his friend there... I do like that the heroes are starting to come together, and meet each other. Now that the storylines are converging it might get back to the Sylar storyline. Ok and again, who was the guy in the bar? The one who "turned off?" the cops powers so he could be captured? He was way weird looking. Had serial killer eyes kind of thing ya know? But I know it wasn't Sylar. I went back and single framed through the scenes with Sylar... and oddly enough, he looked a bit like Howard Hessman. Ok , clearly I need a nap so I'm backing away from this thread so I can lay down and digest all this babbling I just did and maybe make sense of it later. ;D

I am not too sure that he turned off the cop's power. The cop couldn't read his mind nor that off the glasses guy except near the end when he pulled Claire's name out.
Save the cheerleader, save the world.
I am not too sure how this will go down, but I am guessing that it has to do with preventing Sylar from gaining her power and/or if she is around when the final bout takes place, then empathy guy can add her powers to the ones that he gets from everyone else around him.
Did you notice that when Nikki turned to her alter egoi, she had a tatoo of that half DNA string on her shoulder, but when glasses guy and the other guy were at the bed, she didn't? That means that there is some sort of physical transformation going on with her powers.
My guess is that the future Hiro is from a place where things went bad and they lost.

Do we know that Sylar is taking their powers when he takes their brains? I figured as much as well, about the future Hiro. And i know i have to watch the first ones again 'cause i obviously missed some stuff, but are we sure that stripper mom didn't have the "Half DNA" tat when she's normal? And about the Sylar/Hessman comment... that would definitely be weird.
|
|
|
Post by Ecta on Oct 17, 2006 22:41:54 GMT -5
As far as Niki and the tattoo thing, I went back and watched her first scene in episode 1 where she stripped for the camera, and no tat. But was that because they goofed and added the tat in a later ep not knowing her shoulder was shown? I don't know. When she is lying in bed at the end of ep 4 it's real hard to tell if she has it or not. I'm guessing she doesn't. But what is it then? A tat that changes with her personality? *shrug* Another mystery... (Has everyone else heard of Niki's husband DL and what his powers are going to be? He shows up in episode 6 for the first time, so I'm reluctant to discuss them here. But just dying to bring it up !) I'm not really sure what the deal is with Sylar and the brains, (sounds like a bad 80's punk band) but the only thing I could think of was stealing powers from them. I mean why else? Super-powered cannibal? I dunno... As bad as I feel about saying this, I actually laughed my butt off in the scene with Hiro and Ando when Hiro got sucker-punched. I mean it was terrible, but just so dang funny! I was sooo expecting hiro to freeze time before he got hit, but he dropped like a brick! lol (Btw, is everyone reading the online comic? Cause the issue for episode 4 adds some nice detail for Claire.) *Wild speculation and goofy guesses follow this point. Be warned* Now the guy who the cop saw in the bar, and when he was taken... I am only guessing he turns off powers ,or is like Leech and suppresses them? The scene in the bar had the cop hearing all those different people, but when he focused on the freaky guy it got quiet. Was it him, or the drugs they gave the cop? I'm leaning more towards the idea of him turning off the powers intentionally. A couple of lines jump out at me from the begining of ep 4. Glasses guy reads the moniter while the cop is concentrating and says, "Trying to hear my thoughts Matt? Not while my friend is here. He's special too." Clearly the guy works for, or is being used by this whacko group to hunt, or help collect info on other "supers". When Matt says "Who's Claire?" I can't quite make out what glasses man was saying in response... the first part is muddled a bit. Sounds like he says " *They're* further along than we thought. Go deep. Then clean him out." The first word is hard to hear on my copy.... but I'm gonna go with that for now. (and hope someone has an opinion on what he says ) But what is he referring to? "They're" could mean, Matt's powers? Meaning he has gotten stronger, or learned to use his telepathy better than they expected? Or is he referring to the supers in general? Was the guy a stronger telepath than Matt? Did he do a Prof X and go into Matt's brain and literally flip a switch and turn off Matt's telepathy? And before anyone else says it... yes I'm already WAAAAYYY too obsessed with this show. Can't help it. It's all super hero-y and a mystery. How can you not be hooked? *ramble-ramble-ramble*
